Unit Sketch


Unit Topic--Point of View
Subject--English
Grade--10
Time Frame--about 2 weeks

Stage 1--Desired Results:

What should students learn as a result of this unit?

California Standard 3.9--Explain how voice, persona, and the choice of a narrator affect characterization and the tone, plot, and credibility of a text.

--The learner will identify 4 different points of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person limited, 3rd person omniscient) in literature.

--The learner will understand how the choice of narrator affects characterization, tone, plot, and     credibility.

--The learner will use reading strategies such as analyzing writer's purpose, questioning a narrator's credibility, and drawing conclusions to analyze point of view.

Stage 2--Evidence

What evidence will show that students have met the Stage 1 goals?

--In a quiz, the learner will identify which point of view is used in example texts.

--The learner will be able to write a paragraph in each of the 4 main points of view.

--The learner will produce a 4 short videos in which a narrator uses each of the 4 main points of view.

--The learner will write a response to literature essay that analyzes how an author's choice of narrator/point of view affects characterization, the tone and plot of a story, and the narrator's credibility, which the teacher will score with a 4-point rubric.

Stage 3--Learning Plan

What key learning events will help students reach the goals and be successful on the assessments?

--The teacher will assess prior knowledge of Point of View using a pretest
--The learner will watch a Brainpop video on Point of View and complete a quiz on the video
--The teacher will disseminate at handout that describes the characteristics of each of the 4 main types of point of view.
--In pairs or small groups, the learner will create a Thinking Map (Tree Map) that identifies the 4 main types of point of view and the characteristics of each type of point of view.
--As a whole group, the class will read 3 short stories--"The Storyteller," "Typhoid Fever," and "Evacuation Order No. 19," and discuss how the choice of narrator affects characterization, tone, plot, and credibility.
--The learner will create a Powerpoint presentation that describes the point of view of the narrator in each of the 3 stories
--As a whole group, the class with go through a pre-writing process that will lead to the development of individual response to literature essays that analyze how an author's choice of narrator/point of view affects characterization, the tone and plot of a story, and the narrator's credibility.

  1. Sounds like students are given an opportunity to dig deep in regards to point of view; absolutely like the idea for 4 short videos to show 4 main points of view. Are students collaborating on PowerPoint and short videos?

  3. Theresa, I love your technology integration ideas, especially the creation of four videos to demonstrate the four points of view! The collaboration idea is a great idea too! Common core standards include collaboration at each level, from what I see so far!

  6. I appreciate that there is so much tech integration here. It seems that point of view is something that by that point in their lives they might inherently know from TV or Movies, but not know how to explain or articulate in writing. This unit seems like a great way to trick them into understanding, and I use trick in the loosest possible way.
